High-speed DIC measurement system for railway rail displacement and vibration testing

Date:2025-04-29

Understanding the vibration behavior of railway track components is crucial to the design of railway machinery. The XTOP3D XTDIC-SPARK 3D high-speed measurement system—comprising high-speed cameras and dynamic analysis software—delivers high-precision data on displacement, velocity, and acceleration. It enables full-field, high-resolution vibration measurement of the test object based on markers or feature points.

The Need for Non-Contact DIC Vibration Measurement

To control and mitigate the adverse effects of vibration, precise measurement and analysis of structural vibration are essential; this allows for a better understanding of vibration characteristics and enables targeted vibration control.

Contact-based vibration measurement methods, such as those using accelerometers, introduce additional mass loading during setup and wiring. Furthermore, the installation and cabling processes are complex and may alter the structure's dynamic characteristics.

Meanwhile, non-contact methods—such as Laser Doppler Vibrometers (LDVs)—face limitations: single-point vibrometers provide discontinuous data, scanning vibrometers suffer from poor full-field synchronization, and operating distances are often short.

The field of vibration measurement requires solutions that offer greater ease of use, denser measurement points, longer operating distances, higher efficiency, a wider measurement range, and a more intuitive visualization of vibration states.

XTOP3D High-Speed DIC Measurement Solution

The XTOP3D XTDIC-SPARK 3D high-speed measurement system enables direct control of high-speed cameras to capture and record the vibrational displacement of structural components under various loading conditions—ranging from static to dynamic loads. High-speed DIC is one of the most widely used non-contact video-based vibration measurement methods.

Unlike accelerometers and LDV, high-speed DIC employs a non-contact measurement approach that generates instantaneous full-field displacement maps rather than single-point values; it is generally faster, provides more comprehensive data, and is easier to operate than traditional sensing methods.

Furthermore, compared to scanning laser Doppler methods, high-speed DIC offers lower costs and higher data acquisition efficiency. Its capability for full-field vibration visualization provides a significant advantage for measuring vibrations in complex structures.
